Organization Summary

America's Heroes of Freedom (AHOF) offers those who have been affected by widespread traumatic events a chance to be recognized for their selfless acts, an acknowledgement of their suffering, and a venue that promotes healing and recovery over the long-term.

Vision Statement

America's Heroes of Freedom (AHOF) is founded and presided by Ms. Susan Brewer. AHOF was incorporated as a non-profit organization in April 2002. Located in the Washington, D.C. area, AHOF's first and major effort was "Washington D.C. Honors America's Heroes of Freedom" — a tribute event that honored the heroes that helped save lives on September 11th and offered over 1,800 Pentagon family members a venue for healing.

AHOF recognizes that Congress passed Public Law 107-89, to proclaim September 11 as Patriot Day so that the people of the United States would honor those individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks. Furthermore, in a proclamation issued by President Bush, he declared, "I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services and candlelight vigils." AHOF will continue to host commemorative events that will support Patriot Day tributes in order to uphold the intentions of P.L. 107-89.

AHOF will primarily focus on military, law enforcement, fire and rescue services, and civil services. It will also reach out to individuals whose acts are instrumental in rescuing others from harm's way, who act selflessly in the face of danger, and who provide comfort to those suffering after a public tragedy.

AHOF also intends to support educational forums that focus on self-care for rescue and recovery workers at risk for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and provide information on responding to public tragedies throughout the year.

Children are uniquely affected by trauma, and AHOF recognizes that they need special programs that are age-appropriate and offer healing and understanding. AHOF hopes to help children by matching them up with role models from their communities or celebrities during programs that help children express their fears and find comfort and guidance.

A longer-term goal for AHOF is its Freedom Center — a Museum/Learning Center, which would be an interactive site that would include museum-quality displays on National tragedy recovery, with a particular focus on September 11th and an educational facility that promotes understanding of public tragedies and opportunities for healing, recovery, and growth. The goal of the center would be to offer visitors the opportunity to learn how others have responded to public tragedies and how they came together in an effort to heal or give comfort to others.
