Original Press Release
America's Heroes of Freedom recognizes that Women are often the unsung heroes of rescue and recovery efforts since most first response agencies are male dominated. Women who serve in the military, law enforcement, fire/EMS, as volunteer and with other front line agencies are important contributors to the rescue and recovery efforts after a public tragedy. Women Are Heroes Too will be a tribute held on May 21, 2003 at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial located at the gates of Arlington Cemetery. "We feel it is important to honor the courage and sacrifices made by women towards the preservation of life and freedom, and that our doing so is not an afterthought but a priority and imperative," said AHOF founder, Susan Brewer. Many Senators and Congressman have joined the Honorary Committee for this tribute.
Among the tribute honorees will be women who were part of the September 11 rescue effort, treated sailors on the U.S.S. Cole, aided in the capture of the DC sniper, revisited Vietnam, and died in Oklahoma City. These women represent our military, law enforcement, journalism, mothers, girl scouts, volunteers, fire and rescue services, and medicine. Lisa Jefferson, the AirFone supervisor who last spoke to Todd Beamer before his hijacked flight crashed in Pennsylvania will appear. A special segment will be devoted to the astronauts who died when the space shuttle, Columbia broke up over the skies of Texas.
The Women Are Heroes Too tribute will include several key speakers from government, corporate and volunteer agencies, as well as performers who want to share their message of hope and to express the pride of a grateful nation. Singer Eric Horner has written a special song, She is a Hero for this event that he will perform.
America's Heroes of Freedom is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing commemorative, educational and healing opportunities to those affected by national tragedy. AHOF is an advocate for the Department of Homeland Security and is planning on opening a Freedom Center, (at the former site of the Newseum in Arlington, VA) which will focus on national tragedy response, Homeland Security and emergency preparedness. The Freedom Center museum will feature art and artifacts and the Education Center will allow organizations to train in emergency response and other related topics.
